What Anesthesia Is Used for Surgical Tooth Extraction?

vertically impacted wisdom teeth that needs surgical tooth extraction

Hearing you might need a surgical tooth extraction can make anyone a little uneasy—and that’s completely normal. The good news? Modern dentistry makes the process far more comfortable than most people expect. At Queensboro Plaza Dental Care in Long Island City, Dr. Michael Nguyen and Dr. Daniel Barayev focus on keeping every patient relaxed and pain-free from start to finish.

The type of anesthesia used depends on your comfort level, the complexity of your extraction, and your personal preferences. Here’s what you can expect.

Local Anesthesia: Quick, Effective, and Completely Numbs the Area

For most surgical extractions, we begin with local anesthesia—a small injection that numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue. The numbing medicine works quickly, and within a few minutes, the area feels comfortably dull and free of pain.

You’ll still be awake and aware, but you won’t feel anything sharp—just a little pressure or movement during the procedure. The numbness gradually wears off after your visit, and any mild soreness afterward can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

For patients who feel a bit nervous about the injection or procedure, local anesthesia can be paired with a form of sedation for added comfort and peace of mind.

Nitrous Oxide: Light Relaxation That Wears Off Quickly

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is one of the most popular sedation options for a reason—it takes the edge off without putting you to sleep. You’ll breathe it in through a small mask that fits over your nose, and within minutes, most people feel calm and relaxed.

Once the procedure is complete and the gas is turned off, the effects fade almost instantly. You’ll be able to drive yourself home and return to your normal routine right away.

Oral Sedation: A Calmer, More Drowsy Experience

If you need something stronger than nitrous oxide, oral sedation might be a good fit. Before your appointment, you’ll take a prescribed pill that helps you feel deeply relaxed—many patients even drift in and out of light sleep.

You’ll still be able to respond to gentle questions or instructions, but the details of the visit may feel a little hazy afterward. Because it takes a few hours to wear off, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Oral sedation is a great option if you have dental anxiety or are having a longer procedure.

IV Sedation: Deep Relaxation for Complex Extractions

For more complex or involved cases, such as impacted wisdom tooth removal, IV sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation. The medication is given through a small IV line, and the sedation level can be adjusted throughout the procedure.

You’ll be in a dreamlike state—awake enough to respond but so relaxed that most patients remember very little afterward. Throughout your visit, our team continuously monitors your vital signs to ensure everything stays safe and comfortable.

Great overall experience getting a dental cleaning. Very friendly staff, beautifully designed office, and a comfortable experience watching calming Netflix nature programming while in the chair. Complimentary beverages are in the waiting room and so is a little play area for kids.
It felt to me that this was a patient-focused family practice as opposed to a cold, corporate dental mill trying to churn through as many patients as possible.
I’ll definitely be coming back here for all my dental needs and I highly recommend.

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are very welcoming and they provide an excellent experience every time I visit. I’ve only been here twice for annual checkups but would definitely consider and recommend this place to anyone who appreciates good customer experience and a very thoughtful approach to making sure that you feel at home. I have some procedures set up for later in the month and I must actually be the only person in the world actually looking forward to a dentist appointment.
