How Older Dentures Start to Change

Usually, the first signs show up in everyday routines. Food starts getting underneath the denture more often, the lower denture lifts when you laugh, or you push it back into place with your tongue during a meal. Avoid using household glue if the denture breaks. Keep the pieces together and bring them with you. Depending on the age and overall condition of the denture, repair or replacement may be the better choice.
Can Your Dentures Be Adjusted or Relined Instead?
Replacement is not always the first step. If the denture itself is still in good condition and the main problem is that your gums have changed shape, a reline may improve the fit. Adjustments can also help with specific pressure points or minor bite problems.
However, a reline cannot restore badly worn denture teeth, repair repeated fractures, or correct every change in an older denture. If the denture is loose, worn, repaired several times, and changing how you eat, continuing to adjust it may only address one problem at a time.
Bring your current denture with you and tell us what has been bothering you. We can look at the fit, the bite, the condition of the teeth, and any repairs it has already had. From there, we can decide whether it makes sense to keep working with it or start with a new denture.
What About Implant-Supported Dentures?
If movement has always been one of your biggest frustrations, replacing an older denture may also be a good time to ask about implant-supported options. These dentures attach to dental implants in the jaw, which can give them more stability than a traditional removable denture.
Implant-supported dentures still need regular care, and the denture itself can wear over time. The attachments may also need maintenance as the years go by. However, patients who have spent years dealing with a loose lower denture may appreciate having another option to consider.
