Implant Supported Dentures vs. Traditional Dentures

implant supported dentures vs traditional dentures

Tooth loss affects more than just your smile—it can change how you eat, speak, and feel day to day. Dentures remain one of the most common ways to restore function and confidence, but not all dentures are the same. At Queensboro Plaza Dental Care in Long Island City, Dr. Michael Nguyen and Dr. Daniel Barayev offer both traditional dentures and implant supported dentures. Knowing the differences can help you feel more confident about your next step.

What Are Traditional Dentures?

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and are held in place by suction, adhesives, or a mix of both. They can replace a full arch of teeth or just a section with partial dentures. While often the most budget-friendly solution, some patients notice they can slip, shift, or cause sore spots. Eating certain foods—like apples or steak—can be challenging, and adjustments are common as the jaw naturally changes shape over time.

What Are Implant Supported Dentures?

Implant supported dentures are anchored to dental implants placed in the jawbone. Instead of sitting loosely on the gums, the dentures snap or clip onto the implants, creating a much more secure fit. Because the implants stimulate the jawbone, they also help prevent bone loss—a common issue with long-term denture wear. Patients often tell us implant supported dentures feel more like natural teeth, making it easier to chew, laugh, and smile without second-guessing.

Key Differences Between the Two Options

The biggest differences come down to stability, comfort, and long-term oral health. Traditional dentures are removable and a practical solution for patients looking for a faster, more affordable option. Implant supported dentures, by contrast, stay firmly in place and can restore stronger bite function. They also help protect against jawbone shrinkage, which can change facial shape over time.

Great overall experience getting a dental cleaning. Very friendly staff, beautifully designed office, and a comfortable experience watching calming Netflix nature programming while in the chair. Complimentary beverages are in the waiting room and so is a little play area for kids.
It felt to me that this was a patient-focused family practice as opposed to a cold, corporate dental mill trying to churn through as many patients as possible.
I’ll definitely be coming back here for all my dental needs and I highly recommend.

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are very welcoming and they provide an excellent experience every time I visit. I’ve only been here twice for annual checkups but would definitely consider and recommend this place to anyone who appreciates good customer experience and a very thoughtful approach to making sure that you feel at home. I have some procedures set up for later in the month and I must actually be the only person in the world actually looking forward to a dentist appointment.
