Tips to Make Your Dental Implants Last a Lifetime

Dental implants are a top-notch way to replace missing teeth and restore your smile. They’re designed to be a permanent solution, but like anything else, they need proper care and a little extra attention to stay in great shape. A dental implant consists of three main parts: the implant post, which is a titanium screw surgically placed into the jawbone to act as a tooth root; the abutment, which connects the post to the restoration; and the crown, the visible part that looks and functions just like a natural tooth. At Queensboro Plaza Dental Care in Long Island City, NY, we want to help you get the most out of your dental implants. With a few simple habits and some smart choices, you can significantly increase the chances of your implants lasting for decades—or even for life!

    1. Keep Up With Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Just because dental implants don’t get cavities doesn’t mean you can skip brushing and flossing. The gum tissue and bone around your implant still need to stay clean and healthy. One of the biggest threats to dental implants is gum disease. Gum disease causes the gums to pull away from the teeth (or implants), leading to bone loss and loosening of the implant post. Here’s what can help:

Brush: Brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean around the implant.

Floss: Use floss, a water flosser, or interdental brushes to get rid of any food particles and plaque between the implant and neighboring teeth.

Mouthwash: Consider using antibacterial mouthwash to reduce the risk of gum inflammation.

    2. Don’t Skip Those Dental Visits

Regular check-ups aren’t just for your natural teeth. They’re essential for making sure your implants are doing well, too. Your dentist will examine the stability of the implant, check for any early warning signs of trouble, and give your teeth a professional cleaning that helps keep your gums healthy.

    3. Wear a Nightguard if You Grind Your Teeth

If you tend to grind or clench your teeth, you could be putting extra pressure on your implants—especially at night when you might not even realize you’re doing it. A custom nightguard acts like a cushion, absorbing the force and protecting both your implants and your natural teeth. Ask your dentist if this could be a good option for you.

    4. Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Your lifestyle habits can have a big impact on your implant’s success. Consider these changes to protect your smile:

Quit Smoking: Nicotine constricts blood vessels and slows healing, making it harder for the implant to properly integrate with the bone.

Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods: Include foods like dairy, leafy greens, and lean proteins to support bone health.

Limit Alcohol: Heavy alcohol consumption can increase inflammation and delay healing.

    5. Avoid Chewing on Hard Objects

Dental implants are strong, but hard foods can still damage the crown or loosen the implant over time. Here’s what to watch out for:

Hard Candies and Ice: Skip these—they can crack the implant crown just like they would a natural tooth.

Sticky Foods: Things like caramel can tug on the crown or abutment.

Non-Food Items: Chewing on things like fingernails or pens can weaken the implant.

As somebody with pretty bad anxiety about the dentist, Doctor Dan made me feel very calm throughout getting one of my teeth pulled. It was also extremely quick, I didn’t even realize it was over. I’ve been a patient here for a while and have always felt comfortable in the atmosphere. Front desk staff, hygienists, and dentists are very kind.

Yesterday was my first time at Queensbroro Dental and hands down the absolute best dental visit I have ever had. I had an emergency visit for a broken molar that was in really bad shape and had the pleasure of being treated by Dr.Dan. After some quick X-rays, Dr.Dan came in to tell me the harsh truth, the tooth must go and I needed a cavity in the next tooth to be taken care of as well. Dr.Dan presented me with three treatment options also demonstrating how each one worked which was amazing. Shortly after Angie one of the receptionist’s came in with the break down of all three plans with what insurance coverages and what I would end up paying. After some careful deliberation the choice to go with an implant was made and shortly after we began. Let me tell you for a man with many big muscles he was so so gentle I honestly didn’t feel a thing and both procedures were done before I even realized it. From front desk to the dentist and even the dental assistant everyone warmed my heart which is so very rare now a days sadly. They truly do care and I will absolutely be going back for further treatment

I had the best visit with dental hygienist Thinley. This was probably the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Her approach was so gentle and she had great bedside manner. I’ve never been had such a gentle cleaning. Usually I’m tense the entire visit and waiting for it to hurt but that didn’t happen at all today. She also explained everything so thoroughly, which I appreciated. The front staff are super friendly and Dr. Barayev was also really nice. 10/10 dental experience!

Excellent service. The receptionist Jazmin is literally so sweet and the reason I even ended up coming here. She helped me book an appointment and explained cost breakdowns in an easily digestible way. Dr Dan was also very thorough and was willing to answer all of my questions and provide clarity when needed. He was very gentle and talked me through everything he was doing. At checkout I was provided with all necessary paperwork and even a little dental care package with a toothbrush toothpaste and floss; I haven’t been to a dentist who has done that in a while so that was a nice surprise. I felt extremely comfortable and well taken care of which is important for me when it comes to any aspect of my health. I will definitely be back!

I want to take a moment to highlight and recognize your hygienist, Jessica. She is truly a gem and exceptional at what she does. Her attention to detail, passion for her work, and the empathetic touch she brings to each visit make getting my teeth cleaned an absolute pleasure. In all my years of dental cleanings, she is the best hygienist I’ve ever had, and she continues to leave a lasting impression. Thank you, Jessica!
