Undergoing a tooth extraction can be a significant event, and ensuring proper aftercare is crucial for a smooth recovery. A common question we get at Queensboro Plaza Dentistry in Long Island City, NY, is how to brush your teeth after tooth extraction. So, we are here to guide you through the process to keep your mouth clean and promote healing.

Immediate Aftercare

First things first, right after your extraction, avoid brushing the area directly. Focus on general oral hygiene but steer clear of the extraction site to allow a blood clot to form and start the healing process. Here are some tips to follow during the first 24 hours:

Rest and Recover: Take it easy and avoid strenuous activity. Keeping your head elevated can help reduce swelling.

Use Ice Packs: Apply ice packs to your face for 15-minute intervals to help minimize swelling.

Avoid Rinsing: Don’t rinse your mouth vigorously, spit forcefully, or use a straw, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot.

Brushing Your Teeth 24 Hours After Extraction

After the first day, you can begin to carefully resume brushing, but it’s essential to be gentle and cautious. Here’s how to do it:

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: Opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid irritating the extraction site. Dr. Nguyen, Dr. Smith, or Dr. Surdi can recommend a suitable toothbrush if you’re unsure which to choose.

Avoid the Extraction Site: Focus on brushing the other areas of your mouth, steering clear of the extraction site for at least a few more days. Be gentle to prevent disturbing the healing area.

Use Gentle Strokes: Apply gentle, circular strokes when brushing to avoid any unnecessary pressure that might affect the extraction area.

Rinse Gently: After brushing, rinse your mouth gently with a warm saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) to help keep the area clean. Avoid using mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can irritate the extraction site.

Continued Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infection and promote healing. Here are some additional tips for continued care:

Floss Carefully: You can continue to floss, but be cautious around the extraction site to avoid disrupting the clot.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and alcohol can hinder the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Try to avoid these for at least 72 hours after your extraction.

Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions: Always follow any specific instructions provided by Dr. Nguyen, Dr. Smith, or Dr. Surdi. They might recommend additional or alternative steps based on your individual case.

Signs to Watch For During Recovery

While proper care significantly reduces the risk of complications, it’s essential to be aware of signs that might indicate a problem:

Excessive Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal, but if it continues for more than 24 hours, contact us.

Severe Pain: Pain is expected, but if it’s severe or doesn’t improve, it might be a sign of an issue.

Swelling or Fever: Persistent swelling or fever can indicate an infection. Reach out to our office if you experience these symptoms.

As somebody with pretty bad anxiety about the dentist, Doctor Dan made me feel very calm throughout getting one of my teeth pulled. It was also extremely quick, I didn’t even realize it was over. I’ve been a patient here for a while and have always felt comfortable in the atmosphere. Front desk staff, hygienists, and dentists are very kind.

Yesterday was my first time at Queensbroro Dental and hands down the absolute best dental visit I have ever had. I had an emergency visit for a broken molar that was in really bad shape and had the pleasure of being treated by Dr.Dan. After some quick X-rays, Dr.Dan came in to tell me the harsh truth, the tooth must go and I needed a cavity in the next tooth to be taken care of as well. Dr.Dan presented me with three treatment options also demonstrating how each one worked which was amazing. Shortly after Angie one of the receptionist’s came in with the break down of all three plans with what insurance coverages and what I would end up paying. After some careful deliberation the choice to go with an implant was made and shortly after we began. Let me tell you for a man with many big muscles he was so so gentle I honestly didn’t feel a thing and both procedures were done before I even realized it. From front desk to the dentist and even the dental assistant everyone warmed my heart which is so very rare now a days sadly. They truly do care and I will absolutely be going back for further treatment

I had the best visit with dental hygienist Thinley. This was probably the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Her approach was so gentle and she had great bedside manner. I’ve never been had such a gentle cleaning. Usually I’m tense the entire visit and waiting for it to hurt but that didn’t happen at all today. She also explained everything so thoroughly, which I appreciated. The front staff are super friendly and Dr. Barayev was also really nice. 10/10 dental experience!

Excellent service. The receptionist Jazmin is literally so sweet and the reason I even ended up coming here. She helped me book an appointment and explained cost breakdowns in an easily digestible way. Dr Dan was also very thorough and was willing to answer all of my questions and provide clarity when needed. He was very gentle and talked me through everything he was doing. At checkout I was provided with all necessary paperwork and even a little dental care package with a toothbrush toothpaste and floss; I haven’t been to a dentist who has done that in a while so that was a nice surprise. I felt extremely comfortable and well taken care of which is important for me when it comes to any aspect of my health. I will definitely be back!

I want to take a moment to highlight and recognize your hygienist, Jessica. She is truly a gem and exceptional at what she does. Her attention to detail, passion for her work, and the empathetic touch she brings to each visit make getting my teeth cleaned an absolute pleasure. In all my years of dental cleanings, she is the best hygienist I’ve ever had, and she continues to leave a lasting impression. Thank you, Jessica!
