5 Tricks to Get Your Kids Excited About the Dentist

Does bringing your little one to the dentist feel like you’re pulling teeth? Dentists rank high amongst things that children fear, along with the dark and the infamous Boogeyman. Although your child might not be keen on the idea of coming to see us, routine checkups and cleanings are an integral part of ensuring they maintain a healthy, beautiful smile. In today’s post, we’re going to discuss a few ways to get your kid excited to come visit Dr. Nguyen!

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The American Dental Association recommends that you bring your child in for their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of when their first baby tooth emerges. At this appointment, we will make sure their teeth and gums are healthy. Another benefit of early infancy dental visits is priming your child with positive dental experiences early-on so dental care becomes routine part of the rest of their life.

  1. Positive Reinforcement
  2. While it would be magical for children to automatically be complacent about visiting the dentist’s office, there is often some kicking and screaming involved. To get your child to cooperate, use positive reinforcement to calm them down and promote good behavior. Positive voice modulation, encouraging and empathetic facial expressions, verbal praise, and appropriate physical demonstrations of affection are great primers. Other examples include bribing them with stickers, toys, balloons, and tasty but healthy treats like smoothies and fresh fruit. We use positive reinforcement to establish a strong and lasting doctor-patient relationship with our young patients. We also offer a cavity-free club and prizes after each appointment to get your child excited about visiting our office!

  3. Our Kid-Friendly Amenities
  4. We understand that children are often a little wary about visiting us so we’ve armed our office with kid-friendly amenities to keep your child entertained. Play their favorite Netflix cartoon on the TVs we have in our private treatment rooms while they snuggle up with our cozy blankets and pillows. We also offer complimentary beverages, an iPad with games, and music headphones.

  5. Tooth-Fairy Talk
  6. While this option is completely up to the discretion of the parent or guardian, you could make a fun dental tradition around the Tooth Fairy myth. The tooth fairy is a gatherer of baby teeth that leaves behind exciting treasures for your child. Your child may look forward to getting their teeth cleaned at our office if they know they’ll be rewarded by the Tooth Fairy for healthier baby teeth!

  7. Amp Up Their Routine Oral Care Regimen
  8. A great way to get your kid interested in their oral health is to amp up their brushing experience with fun dental care products. Toothbrushes (especially electric) with their favorite cartoon character on them can inspire them to take a more active role in the care of their teeth and gums. Other cool products include mouthwash that turns plaque blue, chew tablets that highlight plaque, toothbrushes that play a song in your mouth, and colorful tongue scrapers. Making at-home dental hygiene engaging leads to positive thoughts and ideas about dental care.

  9. Sleight of Hand
  10. If we can’t get them completely comfortable in the dental chair, another helpful approach is distraction! As the parent who wants to soothe their child, keep their mind off the dental work that we’re doing with funny noises, songs, magic tricks, stories, etc.

As somebody with pretty bad anxiety about the dentist, Doctor Dan made me feel very calm throughout getting one of my teeth pulled. It was also extremely quick, I didn’t even realize it was over. I’ve been a patient here for a while and have always felt comfortable in the atmosphere. Front desk staff, hygienists, and dentists are very kind.

Yesterday was my first time at Queensbroro Dental and hands down the absolute best dental visit I have ever had. I had an emergency visit for a broken molar that was in really bad shape and had the pleasure of being treated by Dr.Dan. After some quick X-rays, Dr.Dan came in to tell me the harsh truth, the tooth must go and I needed a cavity in the next tooth to be taken care of as well. Dr.Dan presented me with three treatment options also demonstrating how each one worked which was amazing. Shortly after Angie one of the receptionist’s came in with the break down of all three plans with what insurance coverages and what I would end up paying. After some careful deliberation the choice to go with an implant was made and shortly after we began. Let me tell you for a man with many big muscles he was so so gentle I honestly didn’t feel a thing and both procedures were done before I even realized it. From front desk to the dentist and even the dental assistant everyone warmed my heart which is so very rare now a days sadly. They truly do care and I will absolutely be going back for further treatment

I had the best visit with dental hygienist Thinley. This was probably the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Her approach was so gentle and she had great bedside manner. I’ve never been had such a gentle cleaning. Usually I’m tense the entire visit and waiting for it to hurt but that didn’t happen at all today. She also explained everything so thoroughly, which I appreciated. The front staff are super friendly and Dr. Barayev was also really nice. 10/10 dental experience!

Excellent service. The receptionist Jazmin is literally so sweet and the reason I even ended up coming here. She helped me book an appointment and explained cost breakdowns in an easily digestible way. Dr Dan was also very thorough and was willing to answer all of my questions and provide clarity when needed. He was very gentle and talked me through everything he was doing. At checkout I was provided with all necessary paperwork and even a little dental care package with a toothbrush toothpaste and floss; I haven’t been to a dentist who has done that in a while so that was a nice surprise. I felt extremely comfortable and well taken care of which is important for me when it comes to any aspect of my health. I will definitely be back!

I want to take a moment to highlight and recognize your hygienist, Jessica. She is truly a gem and exceptional at what she does. Her attention to detail, passion for her work, and the empathetic touch she brings to each visit make getting my teeth cleaned an absolute pleasure. In all my years of dental cleanings, she is the best hygienist I’ve ever had, and she continues to leave a lasting impression. Thank you, Jessica!
