If you’ve lost a tooth, you may feel like there’s nothing you can do to replace it. Luckily, that’s not the case. Dental implants are a long-lasting, natural-looking option that function very similarly to real teeth.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant has three parts: a titanium screw that is placed in the jaw to replace the missing tooth root; a restoration above the gumline, which could be a crown, dental bridge, or denture; and an abutment to connect the implanted screw with the restoration. The screw allows for your replacement tooth to be firmly in place, so you won’t have to worry about it slipping or popping out of your mouth. Dental implants are one of the most popular options for tooth replacement.
What Is the Dental Implant Procedure?
Overall, the implant procedure process takes about five to six months, depending on how many teeth you are missing and whether or not they are located on your upper or lower jaw.
- First, Dr. Nguyen will drill into your gum and jawbone and implant the screw into the jaw.
- A temporary cap will be placed over the screw to help the area heal. In a few months, the screw will fuse with your jawbone, making it a strong substitute root.
- Once the screw is fused with your jaw, you will return to our office to receive your restoration.
- If you are missing a single tooth, you will receive either a dental crown or bridge. If you are missing multiple teeth in a row, you could also receive implant-supported dentures, which won’t slip out of your mouth.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants look and feel very similar to natural teeth and can last up to 25 years with proper care. You will be able to talk, eat, and smile with confidence, and no one will realize the difference!
