Should I Use Mouthwash?

Do you use mouthwash regularly, or are you wondering if you should add it to your oral hygiene routine? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Our patients at Queensboro Plaza Dental Care often ask us if mouthwash is actually effective and if they should use it. Here’s our answer: mouthwash is a great addition to a good oral hygiene routine, but it definitely does not substitute for regular brushing and flossing!

How Does Mouthwash Protect My Teeth?

While mouthwash cannot remove oral bacteria and plaque from your teeth the way brushing can, it still provides plenty of benefits. Rinsing with mouthwash can kill oral bacteria, reducing your risk for cavities and gum disease. Mouthwashes containing fluoride can also strengthen your tooth enamel by depositing necessary minerals on the surface of your teeth.

When Should I Use Mouthwash?

To get the most bang for your buck, make sure you’re using mouthwash at the right time. In general, we recommend waiting about 30 minutes after brushing your teeth to rinse with mouthwash. This allows the fluoride in your toothpaste to sit on your teeth. Another great time to use mouthwash is after flossing. This can help rinse food particles, clean your mouth, and freshen your breath. In a pinch, you can quickly rinse with mouthwash after lunch or snacks to clean your teeth – just remember that rinsing is not a substitute for brushing your teeth!

Should My Kids Use Mouthwash?

If you have young children, wait until they’re a little older before introducing mouthwash. In general, kids under 6 should not use mouthwash. There are two reasons for this. First, mouthwash in young children can lead to fluorosis (spots on teeth due to too much fluoride). Second, young children may be prone to swallowing mouthwash. For kids between 6-12, you should supervise their use of mouthwash. If you’re confident that they’re able to rinse and then spit out the mouthwash, it may make a great addition to their oral hygiene routine.

As somebody with pretty bad anxiety about the dentist, Doctor Dan made me feel very calm throughout getting one of my teeth pulled. It was also extremely quick, I didn’t even realize it was over. I’ve been a patient here for a while and have always felt comfortable in the atmosphere. Front desk staff, hygienists, and dentists are very kind.

Yesterday was my first time at Queensbroro Dental and hands down the absolute best dental visit I have ever had. I had an emergency visit for a broken molar that was in really bad shape and had the pleasure of being treated by Dr.Dan. After some quick X-rays, Dr.Dan came in to tell me the harsh truth, the tooth must go and I needed a cavity in the next tooth to be taken care of as well. Dr.Dan presented me with three treatment options also demonstrating how each one worked which was amazing. Shortly after Angie one of the receptionist’s came in with the break down of all three plans with what insurance coverages and what I would end up paying. After some careful deliberation the choice to go with an implant was made and shortly after we began. Let me tell you for a man with many big muscles he was so so gentle I honestly didn’t feel a thing and both procedures were done before I even realized it. From front desk to the dentist and even the dental assistant everyone warmed my heart which is so very rare now a days sadly. They truly do care and I will absolutely be going back for further treatment

I had the best visit with dental hygienist Thinley. This was probably the best dental experience I’ve ever had. Her approach was so gentle and she had great bedside manner. I’ve never been had such a gentle cleaning. Usually I’m tense the entire visit and waiting for it to hurt but that didn’t happen at all today. She also explained everything so thoroughly, which I appreciated. The front staff are super friendly and Dr. Barayev was also really nice. 10/10 dental experience!

Excellent service. The receptionist Jazmin is literally so sweet and the reason I even ended up coming here. She helped me book an appointment and explained cost breakdowns in an easily digestible way. Dr Dan was also very thorough and was willing to answer all of my questions and provide clarity when needed. He was very gentle and talked me through everything he was doing. At checkout I was provided with all necessary paperwork and even a little dental care package with a toothbrush toothpaste and floss; I haven’t been to a dentist who has done that in a while so that was a nice surprise. I felt extremely comfortable and well taken care of which is important for me when it comes to any aspect of my health. I will definitely be back!

I want to take a moment to highlight and recognize your hygienist, Jessica. She is truly a gem and exceptional at what she does. Her attention to detail, passion for her work, and the empathetic touch she brings to each visit make getting my teeth cleaned an absolute pleasure. In all my years of dental cleanings, she is the best hygienist I’ve ever had, and she continues to leave a lasting impression. Thank you, Jessica!
